Now that the snow has finally melted, you and your family may be looking for the best things to do on Long Island. Luckily, whether you’re in Nassau County or Suffolk County, there are plenty of fun day trips you can take with kids this spring. Below are five clever ideas that are just a quick drive away.
- Visit the Old Bethpage Village Restoration
Kids of all ages will appreciate this replica of a 19th Century Long Island agricultural community. Learn about history by watching live re-enactments and participating in hands-on activities. The Old Bethpage Village Restoration opens in early April, and features special activities for their opening weekend.
- Experience a Baseball Game as a Family
There’s no greater source of old-fashioned entertainment as catching a live baseball game together. Grab tickets for a Long Island Ducks game and be sure to root for the home team! No visit is complete without a Quacker and some cracker jack. Keep an eye out for special events and discounts as well, as they run plenty of promotions.
- Spend a Day on the Farm
Take a trip out to Yaphank to the Suffolk County Farm, operated by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center. They offer plenty of special events, as well as shows and educational programs. Your children will love being able to get up close to the farm animals and visiting the butterfly house.
- Discover Together at the Aquarium
There’s plenty to do at the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center, so be sure to get there early! Get up close with a penguin, take a selfie with a Sea Lion, go for a tour on the Explorer Boat, and much more. There is something for every member of your family to enjoy at the aquarium.
- Have a Picnic at Sagamore Hill
Once the summer home of Theodore Roosevelt, Sagamore Hill offers over 83-acres to explore, along with plenty of history to learn. Stop by the Theodore Roosevelt Center to take a tour and explore actual historical artifacts, and then go for a walk on the grounds. Choose a nice day and be sure to pack a healthy lunch to share in the picnic area.
