Kids in the Kitchen Cooking Class

On 1/3 students will roll out the dough and make their own personal pizzas. On 1/10 students will whip up a batter to create yummy golden waffles. Book Reading & Signing: Spirit of the Wind

Long Island teen author Yasmine Hamdi will visiting Quogue Wildlife Refuge share her book, Spirit of the Wind. She will be speaking about the book, a middle grade novel, her inspiration in writing it and will do a brief reading. Attendees will then have the opportunity to win a free copy of Spirit of the Wind. Yasmine will be signing books and meeting readers after the program. 16-year-old Yasmine wants to inspire children to look after the planet and show them that they’re never too young to make a difference in the world. Yasmine actively speaks to schools across the U.S and has been highlighted in Inspiring Teens Magazine and Too Pretty Brand’s women strength movement. For wildlife enthusiasts ages 8-13 years old. Books will be for sale at $10 each.
Photography Tips for Shooting in Difficult Environments

Today’s digital cameras can produce excellent images in conditions that were once almost impossible when using film. As a result, many more photographers are venturing out to photograph under a broader range of conditions and environments. Photographer Kevin Ferris will present a program that provides some tips on how to plan and photograph in some of these environments. This will include tips on night time photography, focusing in the darkness, issues with composition and equipment, choosing locations, preparing the camera for long exposures and cold conditions, issues with lighting (strobes and hand held lights) and playing with fire (e.g., steel wool photography). Full Wolf Moon Night Hike

Celebrate the New Year with an evening hike through the forest up to North Pond as we look and listen for nocturnal creatures, and enjoy some night vision activities under the light of the moon. The walk will last approximately 1 ½ hours. Native Americans named the January moon after the wolf as this is the time of year when the wolf packs howled hungrily outside of villages. Reservations required at least 24 hours in advance; payment required at time of reservation. A program for adults and families with children over 11. $5.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members.

Storybook Walk with Quogue Library

Enjoy a Storybook Walk along the trail at the Refuge, led by Quogue Children’s Librarian, Lonna. The Mitten is a Ukrainian folktale retold by Jan Brett and is about how a young boy named Nicki loses his white mitten in the snow. One by one, woodland animals find the mitten and crawl in; first a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Ages 4 through 8, accompanied by an adult.

Light the Night Winter Trail Walks

Join us for this magical winter evening winter taking place for the 4th year! Arrive to the Refuge between 5:00 pm & 6:00 pm for a self-guided peaceful stroll through the gently lit forest trails. Enjoy the sights and sounds created by QWR and by Mother Nature. After or before your walk, warm up in the Nature Center near the cozy fireplace with some hot cocoa & cookies. A program for adults and families. $10.00 fee, $5.00 for kids 12 and under. Check in will be inside the Nature Center. Reservations preferred, walk-ins welcome.

Winter Birding at the Refuge

This winter birding walk around the ponds and grounds of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge will meet first in the Nature Center to scan the waters with a spotting scope to find wintering waterfowl. The walk will then proceed north along the trails to find woodland birds, such as golden crowned kinglets, various woodpeckers, maybe cedar waxwings or perhaps a brown creeper! We will also view the Fairy Dell area. This hike will be led by avid birder, naturalist, and Park Ranger from William Floyd Estate Fire Island National Seashore, MaryLaura Lamont. A free program for adults & families.
