The Arsenal is located at 425 Park Avenue, Huntington, New York
THIS EVENT IS FREE!
The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 but it took time for the document to reach the new States – the former colonies of Great Britain. Copies of the document were sent by riders to Committees of Safety to be read to the public. This took place in the Town Of Huntington in late July 1776!
When the document arrived it was read to the gathered citizens of the Town on the Village Green. Those who had been waiting for word from the Second Continental Congress of independence from Great Britain rejoiced when they heard the news. Some became so carried away with excitement that a near riot ensued. The name of the King was torn off the Town’s flag that said Liberty on it. The cloth torn from the flag was stuffed into an effigy of King George III and put up on the Town’s Liberty Pole. Then the effigy was set on fire!
It was a glorious sight!
Come back to the past to that day in June, 1776 and stand on the Village Green just where it all took place.
The entire event will be reenacted by the members of
The Order of the Ancient and Honorable Huntington Militia!
Everything that happened that day will happen AGAIN and you will
BE THERE!
